Trying to put a rebuild together with severe limitations on the payroll is tough. The Sacramento Kings have done some good work with the draft, without question. But bigger trade and free agent options will be hard to come by until a few contracts expire. It's a classic rock and a hard place situation.
With the contracts of Zach LaVine and De'Andre Hunter expiring next offseason, the Kings will have room to work. If Jalen Duren and/or Jonathan Kuminga are options, Sacramento is expected to sign them. A lot of 'ifs' have to fall in place for either player to work out, but there are other options.
RJ Barrett
With his contract coming to an end in 2027 and Ja'Kobe Walter projected to take his spot, Barrett's time on the Raptors may be over. Kings' GM Scott Perry, who is a big relationship guy, was the one who drafted Barrett to the Knicks years ago. A mid-season trade would make sense given Barrett's expiring contract. That being said, this only works if the Kings move other shooting guards.
Davion Mitchell
Mitchell is a former King who is finding himself on the Heat and is slated to be the starting point guard. This partners him with Bam Adebayo as well as Giannis Antetokounmpo. His current contract is up at the end of this season. A new contract will depend on how well he performs. If the Heat choose to cut ties, Mitchell would be a great choice for a return to Sactown as a new point guard.
Jake LaRavia
There's a definite "one that got away" vibe to LaRavia's short tenure with the Kings. They had to let the young power forward walk due to salary cap issues and CBA rules. That doesn't mean that Sacramento didn't want him around, and shouldn't bring him back if the opportunity arises. LaRavia could bring some real depth to the position and would fit the rebuild nicely.
Grant Williams
If the Kings want a veteran power forward, Grant Williams could be an interesting choice. It all depends on whether the Hornets decide to keep him after this season. His highly physical defensive style would be a huge addition to what Sacramento is trying to put together. Plus, his three-point shooting would help with spacing.
Luguentz Dort
After being an OKC fixture for years, Dort now finds himself on the Hawks with an expiring contract. His suffocating defense was key to the Thunder's championship victory. Yes, the Kings don't need more shooting guards but it would be worth it to add a defender of Dort's caliber, especially for under $20 million per season. If the opportunity is there next offseason, the Kings have to take it.
