The Sacramento Kings could not have asked for a better Sixth-Man than Malik Monk. But it became evident last season this franchise doesn't value him the way they used to. Given how hard Monk has played for the Kings, they need to do right by him and move him to a team that will appreciate him.
When it comes to anchoring the secondary unit, Monk has the skills. He's a superb off-the-bench shooting guard who can provide a much needed spark to a floundering offense. Monk has done this for the Kings a number of times, and was a big part of getting Sacramento back to the playoffs.
There's no doubt that the fans in Sactown absolutely love Monk. He's a legit fan favorite like Naz Reid was in Minnesota for many years. Like Reid, it might be time for Monk to move on. Sacramento the city might love him, but Sacramento the NBA franchise doesn't seem to know how they feel.
Monk's standing with the Kings changes
On multiple occasions during the 2025-2026 campaign, Monk found himself riding the bench as a healthy scratch. This would happen several games in a row without explanation and infuriating fans. Out to the blue, the Kings would use him for a few games, then relegate him back to the bench.
This is likely indicative of how the Kings perceive Monk, particularly head coach Doug Christie. He didn't seem to interested in putting Monk to work with any consistency or strategy, two things largely missing from Christie's coaching style. It will be interesting to see if Doug lasts the season.
As it stands, Monk has two season left on his Sacramento contract, the last season of which is a player option. He could, and probably should, finish out 2026-2027, then choose free agency. Monk might be at the tail end of his prime years, but he's still an elite bench veteran for any team.
Sacramento owes Monk a trade sooner rather than later
The Kings were trying to trade Monk in the 2025 offseason, but their asking price was too high. This has also been an issue with their failed attempts to trade Domantas Sabonis, Zach LaVine, and more. But there is a chance for Sacramento to help Monk move to a team that actually wants him.
Toronto has made it very clear that they would be interested in adding Monk to their roster. Being that they may be looking to move RJ Barrett, this is the window the Kings need to trade him. If nothing else, this franchise needs to do right by Monk, and give him a chance to play with a contender.
If the Kings want to keep Monk on the roster, put him to work. At 28, the man is still in his prime and can be a contributor off the bench. But if the Kings aren't serious about using Monk properly, then it's time to suck it up and get a trade done. This franchise owes Monk at least that much respect.
